Creamy, Juicy & Bursting With Flavor!
What ever happened to fruit salad? It used to be a staple at luncheons and graced the table at every dinner occasion when my family gathered. I even would request it as a snack or treat when I was a kid and we rarely could afford fresh fruit. It was on the menu at most reputable restaurants, as well. But now it only lives on in dusty cookbooks. How sad!
This is a real tragedy because, as Julia says, “This salad is so good, you will want it before dinner, as an appetizer, and after dinner, as a dessert!” Her refreshingly simple recipe brings back memories of bygone days and the fleeting innocence of childhood. It makes my heart sing just remembering it.
I am reminded of warm summer breezes that lifted my skirt as I swung higher and higher on the swing in my grandparents’ back garden, leaping off at just the right point in the swing’s arc to fly through the air when my grandmother called me in for a lunch of this salad and a sandwich. Or those languid and humid nights, eating a big bowl of this salad in the coolness of the summer porch as fireflies danced outside the window screens.

Quick Tip: Cutting the grapes in half will make them much easier to eat, and helps remove the choking hazard that whole grapes present to young children and the elderly.
