A New Twist on Thumbprint Cookies

A few days before Christmas each year, my girlfriends and I get together for a cookie swap. At these cookie swaps, we each bring a large batch of one dessert recipe so we can mix and match to have a variety of sweets for our families without making millions of things. Plus it’s a great excuse for all of us to enjoy some mulled wine together before we part to see our families.

One year, Sally brought these delicious thumbprint cookies. I always associate thumbprints with fruit, but these were rich turtle flavored with chocolate and peanut butter (my husband’s favorite). We all tested them out and asked for the recipe. Because of that, we’ve developed the swap into a recipe exchange too – we bring our sweets and several copies of the recipe so we can replicate it throughout the year.

That year I took some of these cookies (what was left after bringing them home that night to my husband), to my in-laws for Christmas Eve. They loved the non-traditional interpretation of the turtle and devoured them before we could even have dinner! Whenever you make these, I recommend making a double batch so you don’t run out. I promise they will go quick!

Quick tip: You can freeze these for up to 4 months and take them out as needed so they don’t go bad!
