Perhaps the name “fool” was discarded in favor of “trifle” because such a concoction was certainly “of little or no consequence.” It was nothing but cream, wearing fancy clothes! Ha! In any case, I am most certainly happy that this dessert form endured the test of time, so that we have the opportunity to enjoy the fabulous concoction we know and love today.

This particular trifle is doubly appealing because it is constructed using another well-known and well-loved dessert:  brownies. Who in their right mind would turn down a dessert made of brownies, chocolate pudding and whipped topping? Not me, I’ll be the one right in the middle of that big bowl, doin’ the backstroke!

INGREDIENTS

1 (19.8 ounce) package brownie mix

1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix

½ cup water

1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk

1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

1 (1.5 ounce) bar chocolate candy

INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare brownie mix according to package directions and cool completely. Cut into 1 inch squares.

In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, water and sweetened condensed milk. Mix until smooth, then fold in 8 ounces whipped topping until no streaks remain.

In a trifle bowl or glass serving dish, place half of the brownies, half of the pudding mixture and half of the 12 ounce container of whipped topping. Repeat layers. Shave chocolate onto top layer for garnish. Refrigerate 8 hours before serving.

Quick Tip:  The trick to making your trifle look pretty, with the edges clean and straight in order to showcase the layers, is to spread each layer starting in the middle of the bowl and working out to the edges
