Add This Mysterious Brew To Your Halloween Party

  • halloween witches brew

I enjoy passing out treats to the costumed kids that are brave enough to make their way down my scary, dimly-lit street, past the dark forest, where voices whisper in the night and branches reach out to snag the unwary. Most years, there are very few that are that brave.

The mysterious mist coming off this punch is caused by dry ice rapidly warming. Dry ice is compressed carbon dioxide gas. When you put it in liquid, it combines with the liquid, making this spooky vapor that resembles smoke. See the Quick Tips for dry ice purchasing and handling information.

INGREDIENTS

2 cups orange juice

½ cup lemon juice

1 750 milliliter bottle sparkling apple cider (or 4 cups apple cider)

1 750 milliliter bottle sparkling white grape juice (or sparkling wine)

Dry ice

INSTRUCTIONS

In a punch bowl or large pitcher, combine orange juice and lemon juice. Add apple cider (or sparkling cider). Add sparkling white grape juice (or sparkling wine).

Slowly add dry ice to punch bowl or pitcher and ensure fluid level is not all the way at the top, otherwise the dry ice may make it boil over. Reserve small chunks of dry ice for individual cups (only if serving to adults – dry ice should not be given directly to children).

Serve immediately. Makes about 11 cups.

This drink is very sweet (pure juice) and can easily be diluted with club soda.

Quick Tip:  Dry ice has a surface temperature of MINUS 109.3 degrees F! If you touch it with your bare hands, it can burn them, giving them instant frostbite, which is very painful. For this reason, do NOT serve even a small piece of it to children, as their curiosity might prompt them to touch it. Wear gloves or use several thicknesses of towel to handle it. Also, dry ice doesn’t melt and turn into water like regular ice does. Instead, it evaporates into carbon dioxide gas.
