Stop Trifling With Me – Gimme That Chocolate!
Just what is a trifle, anyway? It is a layered dessert, usually including some type of cake, fruit and a custard layer. But trifles have become quite popular and they are being constructed out of many different types of layers. This one definitely isn’t your Grandma’s trifle!
Not only are trifles prized for their versatility, but they are also disarmingly simple to make and assemble. Even if they look a little haphazard and sloppy, that is part of their charm. Trust me, they will make a jaw-dropping entrance when you walk amongst your guests bearing aloft this gorgeously-layered, huge bowl.
This is a German Chocolate Cake Trifle. Have you ever tried to make a German Chocolate cake? It is one of my favorites, being more fluffy than moist, almost like eating chocolate air, a result of beating egg whites to start the batter. Then there’s that caramel-like coconut-pecan frosting that’s to-die-for.
But it is quite an undertaking to make one! First of all, it has three layers. How many cake pans do you own? Starting to see the picture? You are going to be in the kitchen a loooong time! Plan on about 3 hours, plus cooling time for the cake. This trifle is SO much easier, and you get the same taste, with the addition of a creamy mousse.

Quick Tip: Plan ahead when making this. It is a good idea to make the mousse and the coconut pecan filling a day before you would like to assemble and serve the trifle. In fact, because it keeps so well in the refrigerator, you can actually assemble the trifle and keep it in your fridge for a day or two before you plan to serve it. Much less stress for you!
