A Refreshing Summertime Dessert, Right Out Of The Pages Of Your Childhood.

Talk about getting hit upside the head with a flood of childhood memories! When I saw the title of Jessica’s refreshing recipe, I was back at my grandmother’s house, waking up to the sound of the mourning doves cooing in the trees outside the bedroom window. I would watch the shadows of the swaying tree leaves on the ceiling of my room, looking for omens about the nature of my day to come.

Bounding out of bed, I dressed in a trice and grabbed the family dog to go play in the public wooded park five blocks from my grandmother’s house. Nobody worried about a 6-year-old girl and a tiny dog wandering loose in the woods in those days. It was simply a much more innocent time….

But I was always back to the house promptly before noon! What would make a young child run like the wind, careen around the corner of the alley and skid to a stop at her grandmother’s side gate? Listen, don’t you hear it? There, over on the next street! It’s the ice cream man! In those days, he pedaled a bicycle with a refrigerated cart on the front, and he would ring the bell on his handlebars to announce his imminent arrival in your neighborhood.

Quick Tip:  If you want to make this pie into an elegant-looking dessert for a special occasion, decorate it with pieces of fruit that correspond to the flavor of your gelatin (see other Quick Tip for ideas).
