Look at these bright beauties baked-up by Laurie and Nancy – don’t they just scream Halloween? That is not just chocolate cake in that bottom layer. It is brownie mix! Now have I got your attention?

That’s right, folks – these cupcakes are really two desserts combined into one flavorful, colorful and multi-textured cupcake! These are going to be a masterful stroke of genius at your Halloween party, and you are sure to get many recipe requests.

The only real trick to making them, since you are using pre-packaged mixes for both the cake and brownie portions, is in making sure that you only put the barest amount of brownie mix in the bottom of your cupcake liner. A spoonful means just that. If you don’t preserve the proportions of 1/3 brownie to 2/3 cake batter, the brownie portion will not fully cook in the allotted time. Remember, you only fill cupcake liners about 2/3 full, anyway, so that bottom layer of brownie mix needs to be quite thin.

Another word of caution is in order. Be sure that you test these with a toothpick before you take them from the oven. With the variance in oven temperature, you might find that you need to bake these for 20 minutes.
