Sorta Good For You?

Now That’s a Real Candied Apple!

This yummy recipe by Atlanta is now on my “Favorites” list! Easy enough, with only 5 ingredients, to be a quick after-school snack. Yet decadent enough to be my guilty-pleasure dessert, when I just must have something sweet, but I don’t want to blow a whole week’s worth of making good food choices by over-indulging in a really high-calorie dessert.

To me, these are a perfect dessert. First, the apple is a healthy choice for the foundation. Adding a light coating of chocolate can actually be a good thing, if you use the more healthful dark chocolate. The nuts even add an element of protein, and just how often would you find protein lurking in a dessert? The caramel drizzle? Well, okay, it’s not all that healthy, but you need a little indulgence, or it wouldn’t qualify as a dessert, now would it?

They are a perfect snack, for all those same reasons, with the added reasons that your kids will probably love them, and they do add at least a little fruit to their diets. This is a notorious problem for mothers of all those picky eaters out there. I really don’t envision that you will have any difficulty in getting your kids to eat these tasty little treats.

Quick Tip:  Make sure that you choose a nice, firm apple for these treats. The recipe specifies Fuji apples, but Jonathans, Honeycrisp or Gala apples would also work well. If you like your apples on the tart side, and really want to enjoy the contrast between the sweet and tart tastes, you could even use Granny Smith apples.
