You’ll Hit a Home Run With These
I wish sliders had been created when I was a kid. We all used to congregate at my grandmother’s house once a month during the summer. Imagine 20-25 people crammed into a 3-bedroom house! In the daytime, all of us cousins would run wild outside until it got dark. It would have been fun to have these sliders packed in our lunches, instead of PB&J, to share with my cousins during our daily trouble-seeking adventures.
At night, we had to settle into our sleeping areas – under the 14-seat dining room table (it was like a cave), in the sunroom (it had a brocade curtain for dramatic entry/exit) or on the sunporch (a cooler room, dug partially underground, with bushes covering its Gothic-arch windows). As the oldest grandchild, I got first choice and I always picked the sunporch.
No talking, at least not loudly enough for an adult to hear you, was allowed. We had to settle down to sleep listening to the conversations of the adults playing cards, while my grandfather tuned-in the Cincinnati Reds on the radio. The “color” announcers did a great job painting a vivid picture. I could visualize every one of them, right down to their scratches and spits. Now and then, there was even a slider!

Quick Tip: If you have ever actually been to Philadelphia and stepped into a legitimate cheesesteak shop, you would spot the “error” in this recipe immediately. A “real Philly cheesesteak” is made with Cheez Whiz, not Provolone cheese. Normally, this cheese-product-in-a-can would disgust me. But when in Philly….somehow it tastes just right. Give it a try!
