In my family we have a strange quirk—we all like to eat what my dad calls “breakfast dessert.” I’m not sure exactly if he started this habit and passed it down to my siblings and me but I’m certainly not complaining! Not waiting to eat dessert until after dinner? That’s heaven on earth—and this cinnamon swirl coffee cake is the perfect breakfast dessert recipe.
I can remember the first time I realized that this family habit of ours was weird. I was 6 years old and at my very first sleep over with a girl who lived down the street. Her mom came to wake us up that morning to come downstairs for breakfast.
She had the table all ready for us. There was a pile of bacon, scrambled eggs and all kinds of fruit. After I ate my fill of that I innocently asked “What’s for dessert?”
I knew something was up when I didn’t get an answer right away. Instead, my friend’s parents shared a glance and then giggled quietly. Finally her dad told me that it wasn’t time for dessert yet and that I’d have to wait until I got home to eat supper for that.
Thankfully, as a now grown woman I am in full command of my breakfast dessert—and this cake is always my first choice!
