You Can Make This Faster Than You Ever Dreamed Possible!
Here is an entirely different type of no-bake dessert – the icebox cake! How many of you out there are old enough to remember what an icebox was? I’ll even give you credit on that question if you are old enough to have heard your parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents talk about an icebox.
For those youngsters in the crowd, an icebox was used in the days of before refrigeration with electricity and the use of coolants was invented (circa 1920s). It was generally a big wooden box, lined with tin or zinc, and in one large compartment, there was an empty space where big blocks of ice were kept, and that ice chilled the other compartment(s), keeping food from spoiling so quickly.
The icebox revolutionized the way people stored food and the composition of their diets. These big blocks of ice were delivered in horse-drawn, and, later, motorized conveyances and taken into your house by the ice delivery person(s) using large set of tongs to grasp and maneuver the blocks of ice.
An icebox cake, like this sumptuous creation by Julianne, is a layered dessert wherein some form of cookie or cracker is used to provide stability and structure. These hard layers are then topped with layers of creamy substances, like pudding or whipped cream.
