5 Ingredients & 20 Minutes – One Simply Elegant Appetizer (Or Dessert)
Fall is the time of the triple harvests: all manner of root veggies, squash and some leafy greens, fruits such as apples and pears, and even some types of grains are ready for harvest now. Elena’s easy and elegant recipe takes advantage of the availability of fresh, juicy pears during this season of abundance.
There will never be a better time for trying out this new recipe, regardless of whether you are using it as an appetizer at your next buffet party or serving it as an elegant dessert to dinner guests. Although it may seem like a strange combination, on the surface, you have probably had pairings of fruit and cheese before, any time you have been served a cheese tray for an appetizer or dessert.
The presentation of this dish, alone, is going to win you some serious “bonus points” as a host or hostess the next time you serve it at a party or other social occasion. Picture steamy hot pear halves, with the pithy cores remove and that cavity filled with creamy melted cheese, sprinkled with nuts and drizzled with honey. It is the rare person who would not appreciate the combination of fruit and cheese.

Quick Tip: If you really, truly cannot bear the thought of putting a blue cheese in your mouth, not even the creamier of the two varieties of Gorgonzola, there are some possible substitutes. First, there is goat cheese. Look for a variety which is mild and creamy. Another possibility is gruyere, which is creamy and nutty tasting when it is younger, getting stronger in taste as it matures. You could use ricotta cheese, which has a very mild taste. You could use mascarpone cheese, which has a texture like thickened cream and a mild, slightly sweet yet slightly sour taste, like cheesecake. Finally, there’s sharp cheddar, which would give the dish an entirely different flavor profile.
