So Easy, You Might Have to Take Up Diving

Quick & Easy Treat From the Sea

Scallops are one of the most tender, delicate and mild-tasting shellfish known as mollusks. Other mollusks are clams, oysters and mussels.

If scallops are on the menu, I almost always order them. I enjoy their slightly sweet taste and their somewhat firm texture that resembles poultry. They don’t have that chewy, fibrous texture like the other mollusks. Nor do they have the type of “fishy” taste that keeps many people from even trying seafood.

Scallops can be a healthy choice if you are watching your weight, as they are a good source of B Vitamins and low-fat protein. Plus there are only 95 calories in a 3-ounce serving!

In spite of being considered somewhat exotic, scallops really do make a cost-effective meal. Sea scallops, which are huge compared to the much smaller bay scallops, generally cost around $20 per pound. But since you can get 5 of those 3-ounce servings from that pound of sea scallops, the cost is only around $4.00 per serving.

The smaller bay scallops are an even better bargain. You can generally find them for less than $10 per pound. This brings the cost down to around $2 per serving. Although the sea scallops make for a more impressive presentation, due to their huge size, I have always found the bay scallops to be tastier.

Quick Tip:   Although this recipe calls for bay scallops, which are the smaller scallops, you could easily substitute the larger sea scallops, shrimp or any of the white fish, such as cod or halibut.
