Coffee, Tea And This Makes Three!

In The Morning, For Breakfast Or In The Evening, For A Snack

It has been a very long time since I indulged myself in the type of lazy Sunday morning breakfast where you drink a leisurely cup of coffee or tea, read the Sunday paper and nibble on coffee cake. I don’t know why this happened, either, because coffee cakes are delicious, all crumbly-tender, fresh from the oven.

When I saw Jamie’s recipe for a fall-inspired coffee cake, I decided to get back in the habit. But a whole coffee cake? I would have to be eating it for weeks, or freeze it. But then I had a better idea! Why not invite my neighbors over? That is another social nicety that seems to have fallen out of favor in our technologically-isolating culture. Neighbors aren’t quite so neighborly, anymore.

Firmly believing the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world,” I set out to invite the neighbors on my small cul-de-sac to a good, old-fashioned coffee klatch for the next Sunday. The first neighbor I approached looked at me quite suspiciously, but since I am our street’s Neighborhood Watch Block Captain, she agreed to come. I invited her to bring her small dog to play with mine. One neighbor stated she flat-out wasn’t interested. Oh well, I tried! The last neighbor was highly enthusiastic, asked what she could bring, etc.

Quick Tip:  If you don’t have a piping bag for applying the glaze, and don’t wish to fool around trying to pour glaze into a Ziploc baggie with one hand and then cut a small hole in one end so you can pipe the glaze that way, without making a mess of yourself and your kitchen, you can always apply the glaze the old-fashioned way and drizzle it on with a spoon or by dipping a dinner knife in the glaze and letting it dribble off the end as you make whatever pattern you want on your cake.
