This Sandwich May Just Change Your Life

  • World's Best Grilled Cheese

Did you know that in the U.S., the modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s? When people were struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese were accessible to everyone. The grilled cheese was born during America’s Great Depression.

Grilled cheese is a fairly new American food, around for a little less then 100 years. We’ve been working on ways to make the world’s best grilled cheese sandwich ever since. Of course, bacon is an ingredient that elevates nearly every dish you add it to.

Ingredients

2 slices bacon

2 slices sour dough bread

1 tablespoon butter, room temperature

1/2 cup jack and cheddar cheese, shredded

2 tablespoons guacamole, room temperature

1 tablespoon tortilla chips, crumbled (optional)

Instructions

Cook the bacon until crispy and set aside on paper towels to drain.

Butter one side of each slice of bread, sprinkle half of the cheese onto the unbuttered side of one slice of bread followed by the guacamole, bacon, tortilla chips, the remaining cheese and finally top with the remaining slice of bread with the buttered side up.

Grill over medium heat until golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Quick tip: If you’re short on time or do not already have pre-made guacamole this sandwich is just as good with sliced avocado.

Your son’s recipe sounds delicious! I, too, experimented & came up with this one many years ago……BLT Grilled Cheese. It’s the same as a regular grilled cheese…..with bacon & tomato, after grilling, you open it & add the lettuce & mayo. OH, the taste!

The sandwich is great, but it is always nice to relate in history it’s proper time frame. The Great Depression was in the 1930’s, not in the 1920’s. It began with the 1929 Bank crash and ended with the beginning of WW2 in 1941.

Do you cook the bacon first? I can’t see it getting thoroughly cooked between the two sandwich pieces in such a short amount of time? Thanks.

Yes, cook the bacon until crisp. I “butter” the outside of the bread with vegan mayo – adds a nice crunchy exterior. Divine!

Instead of butter- use Mayo(salad dressing will work, but mayo is better) on the bread- it adds a whomp to the sandwich!

When making any grilled sandwich I always grill both sides of the bread for that extra crunch. Also one of my favorite touches is when grilling the outside of the bread is to sprinkle parmesan cheese on the outside before grilling and grill it into the outside of the sandwich. OUTSTANDING.
