This Is By Far One Of The Most Indulgent Treats To Leave Our Kitchen

My mother used to always tell me that you can’t beat a fully from scratch treat. In fact, I can’t ever remember her using any mixes or premade ingredients growing up. So suffice to say I had the bar set pretty high for any future baked goods I came across later in life.

I can clearly remember watching her in the kitchen as she whipped her own whipped cream (by hand—I still don’t know where she got the arm strength!) to top freshly made shortcakes and strawberry sauce. Or helping her make my siblings’ birthday cakes. It was a therapeutic process that I continued to enjoy long after I moved out of my parents’ house.

So my friends had a tendency to poke fun of me for me “high society” taste in desserts. But can you blame me? When you’re raised on nothing but homemade you get used to it! I never thought I’d find a semi-homemade dessert that rivaled something that you made from scratch.

Then I went to a friend’s housewarming party and saw the light. While perusing the dessert table I spotted some decadent looking bars and snagged a piece. I took my first bite and fell in love.

Quick tip: To cut neat squares for serving at a party line pan with parchment paper long enough to hang over the edge of your pan. Once the bars are cool lift them out of the pan with the parchment paper and slice.
