It’s taken me a while to truly embrace my love of cooking and baking. Growing up my mom and sister were the culinarily inclined duo in our home, so I often found myself spending time with my dad when they were whipping up some new creation in the kitchen. I loved every minute of the time my dad and I got to spend just the two of us.

We remained close throughout my childhood and even after I moved out on my own. Once in my own space I realized that I did indeed love spending time creating delicious meals and indulgent treats for my friends and family. So I was thrilled when my dad asked me to make him his birthday cake last year.

He told me to go all out and let my imagination run wild—as long as chocolate was somehow involved—so I began wracking my brain for treats that would wow him. For the longest time I had my mind on making a chocolate layer cake.
