We’re Putting a New Spin On a Favorite Food
Growing up my family was about as far from adventurous with food as you could get. We rarely went out to eat (I’m talking maybe two or three times a year) and stuck to staples that we knew everyone liked—think casseroles, soups, and more than a lifetime’s worth of meat and potatoes.
Fortunately, my mom was an excellent cook, so even the simplest dishes always tasted amazing when she prepared them. But I do have to say that by the time I left for college I was more than ready to expand my limited culinary horizon. It was definitely a slow process, but I think now I have acquired a palate that’s pretty open to almost any type of food.
When I think back to those early years away from home there was always one dish in particular that stood out for me. It was served at this hole-in-the-wall pizza joint near my college campus and instantly became one of my favorite meals ever.
It was a hot and delicious calzone—something I had never even heard of before! All my favorite things about pizza wrapped up in toasty crust? The best idea ever. So when I saw this calzone recipe I knew I’d be in love.

Quick tip: Brush the crust with butter instead of olive oil if you don’t have any on hand.
