This Dish Is Dangerously Delicious—We Dare You To Stop At One Bite

My mother was an amzing cook who had a formidable presence in the kitchen. A proud southern woman, the kitchen was her domain and everyone knew that when she was in the middle of whipping up one of her many delicious dishes that you should just stay out of her way. From five course dinners to the most difficult desserts nothing was out of her culinary reach.

When I look back on my childhood with my mother so many fond memories come to mind. But I have to say that one in particular always stands out. It was a fairly brisk fall Saturday for us southerners and my mom was on a mission to make us a few pies to enjoy throughout the week (and to recipe test for Thanksgiving).

Typically when she got into one of her baking frenzies she wanted to be alone. She had her sytems in place and often was faster when she worked by herself. But this particular day as she started pulling out her ingredients she turned to me and said, ”What do you think, sweet pea, want to help today?”

And then she taught me to make what is still one of my favorite desserts today.

Quick tip: Leave the pie in the turned off oven to cool after it’s done baking for about an hour. This helps set the custard.
