Slow Cooker Version of a Popular Chinese Takeout Dish

  • general tso chicken

This Recipe is Easier Made Than Said

There is heated debate about how you are supposed to pronounce the name of this tasty dish:  General Tso’s Chicken. Some say “so,” while others claim it is “sow.” Quite a few give up and say “General’s Toes!” So I took the debate to an actual Chinese person.

His answer is a bit hard to describe, to English-speaking people, but imagine you are saying the word “tower.” As you start to form the “T” sound, instead of opening your mouth, push your tongue against the back of your front teeth and sort of hiss out that “T” sound. Now it sounds a bit like “sour,” but with a T-hiss. Drop that second syllable and you’ve got it: General Tso’s Chicken.

All linguistic conundrums aside, this is one tasty dish! I have never been in a Chinese restaurant where it was not on the menu, so it must be right up there with the most popular Chinese dishes. I know I order it more frequently than anything else.

So (no pun intended), how does it taste? It is both savory and sweet, which will delight your taste buds. Making this in the slow cooker, you can get the same effect as using a wok, but without the know-how required for wok cooking. It’s an easy meal your family will love.

Quick Tip:  If you like your food a little spicy, this dish tastes great with ¼ teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes added to the sauce.
